My primary research interest lies in the study of democratic politics with a special focus on understanding the processes and modes through which the socially disadvantaged actors gain, or fail to gain, democratic representation. As such, my research themes include labor politics, political parties, social movements, the relationship between democracy and growth, and the political economy of development. Currently I am working on three projects: (1) Democratic institutions and labor politics in East Asia, (2) The relationship between political parties and social movements in Asian democracies, and (3) Globalization, democracy, and migrant workers. Articles appeared in Studies in Comparative International Development, Critical Asian Studies, Korean Observer, Asian Survey, and Asia Pacific Forum. I teach courses on States and Markets in East Asia, Democratization in East Asia, The State and Labor in Asia, Korean Politics Through Cinema, and Social Research Methods. In Fall 2009, I am offering a graduate seminar on Democracy and Labor.
